BSA Gold Star DBD34

The BSA Gold Star DBD34 is a motorcycle made by BSA from 1938 to 1963. The first Gold Star was an M24 model, which had an all-alloy 82 mm x 94 mm bore and stroke, a 496 cc displacement, and a rigid frame made of Reynolds 531 light tubes. The DBD34 had a top speed of 110 mph (180 km/h).

The BSA Gold Star got its start in the 1930s when designer Val Page, his assistant Herbert Perkins, and Jack Amott and Len Crisp from the BSA factory worked on a 500cc BSA Empire Star overhead valve single. In 1937, Wal Handley rode a specially tuned version of this model on the Brooklands track, lapping at over 100 mph and earning a Brooklands Gold Star for his achievement. This inspired BSA to produce the first Gold Star, the M24 model, in 1938.

The BSA Gold Star DBD34 was the ultimate development of the line, which carried on through 1963, with a few machines built to special order even later. Its track success and good looks made it the most coveted "café racer" of the 1950s and '60s. The DBD34 was a road-legal racing motorcycle with a very high gearing and a top speed of 110 mph. The 1960 BSA DBD34 Gold Star is considered the most coveted type of all, in full Clubman's specification. Its 500cc engine was used for Clubman racing and includes a chrome large-capacity fuel tank, clip-ons, rearsets, and flanged alloy rims.

The BSA Gold Star was an all-around performer, doing well in trials, scrambles, American flat tracks, and TT racing in the 1950s and '60s. It dominated the postwar Clubman's TT race, with BSA Gold Stars comprising most of the entries and all of the winners. The Gold Star was built for performance and was fast and fun to ride, but it was also noisy and hard to start, making it not a good bike for getting to work.
