Replacing 2002 Mustang Fuel Pump: Step-By-Step Guide

Replacing the fuel pump on a 2002 Mustang is a moderately complicated job. The fuel pump is located inside the fuel tank, and to access it, a mechanic will need to go through the top of the fuel tank via an access panel in the passenger compartment or by removing the tank from the vehicle. There are several signs that can indicate a failing fuel pump, such as a car that won't start or stalls after starting, a check engine light coming on, or a whirring sound coming from the fuel tank.

Disconnect the negative battery cable

Disconnecting the negative battery cable is one of the first steps to replacing the fuel pump on a 2002 Mustang. This is a relatively simple process that can be done without a mechanic. Here is a detailed, step-by-step guide:

Firstly, turn off the ignition of your Mustang. It is important to never attempt to disconnect the battery cable while the car is still powered on. For safety, it is recommended to wear gloves and safety goggles. Next, you will need to locate the car battery. In most vehicles, including Mustangs, the battery is located under the hood, but it can also be found in the trunk. The battery is a large, block-like component with two large cables attached to it near the engine bay's surface.

Once you have located the battery, you need to identify the negative terminal. This is usually on top of the battery and marked with a "-" symbol and a black plastic cap. The positive terminal, in contrast, will be marked with a "+" and a red cap. Now, you will need to find a wrench that fits the nut on the negative terminal. There is no universal size, so you may need to try a few different wrench sizes. Place the wrench on the nut and turn it counter-clockwise to loosen it.

After loosening the nut, carefully remove the negative connector cable from the battery. Ensure that the cable is moved aside and does not come into contact with the battery again until you are ready. Remove the filler neck

Next, open the fuel filler door and remove the bolts or screws holding the filler neck in place. You may need to remove the right-side trunk cover to access this area. Once the filler neck is loose, grab a 1/2 inch socket and some extensions, and crawl under the car.

You will need to loosen the straps on both the driver's side and passenger side of the car. The driver's side strap is at the front of the car, and the passenger side strap has a bolt at the front and back. Loosen the bolts and remove them, then use your jack to lift the tank slightly to take the weight off the straps. Once the filler neck is out, you can lower the tank completely to the ground. The fuel lines on top should have enough room to accommodate the tank without pulling or causing any strain.

Drop the tank

Now that the filler neck and trunk have been dealt with, it's time to get to the real work. Grab a 1/2-inch socket and a few extensions, and crawl under the car. Loosen the driver's side strap at the front of the car. For the passenger side, there is a bolt at the front and the back. Loosen the back bolt first, then the front. Once you break them loose, get your jack ready and put a board on it. You can jack up the tank just a bit to take the weight off the straps. Then, remove the bolts on the front of the straps. The driver's side strap is hinged and will bend to the back of the car, and the passenger side will rotate around. Now your tank is ready to drop.

This is where a partner comes in handy. Have them slowly lower the jack while you guide the tank down. It will drop almost all the way. The filler neck goes into the side of the tank. You can drop the tank quite a bit, then push the tank and pull the filler neck out of the tank (if you have over a 1/2 tank of gas, some will spill out). Once you pop the filler neck out of the tank, you can lower the tank all the way to the ground. The fuel lines on top have plenty of room to get it lowered; you can set the tank on the ground and not have to worry about pulling them or anything.

Once the tank is dropped, use your fuel line disconnect tool and pop off the lines. They might be a little stubborn, so hit the inside with a bit of WD40 and work them right out. There is also a line toward the front of the tank that's just a vent tube and will slip right off. The last thing you need to do is unhook one electrical connection by the rear bumper. Once you unhook that connection, slide the tank out from under the car.

Replacing the Fuel Pump

Now you will want to take a screwdriver and a shop-vac and clean the top of the pump assembly as best you can. You don't want any of that dirt falling into your tank. Once you're satisfied, take a screwdriver and a hammer and tap the lock ring on top counter-clockwise until it pops loose. If you've never done a fuel pump before, take a good look at it to see how it works. A little WD40 will help here, too.

Once the lock ring is off, the pump assembly will slide right out the top. Just be careful not to knock any of that gunk into the tank. When you get the pump assembly out, replacing it is really straightforward. Follow the instructions in the kit, but basically, you take off four little screws that hold the bracket on, remove one electrical connection and one hose clamp, and pull off the old pump. Then just put your new one on.

Clean the pump assembly

To clean the pump assembly of your 2002 Mustang, you will need a screwdriver and a shop-vac.

Firstly, use the screwdriver to tap the lock ring on top of the pump assembly counter-clockwise until it pops loose. Be careful not to knock any gunk into the tank.
