In the Metro Exodus video game, diesel fuel is a valuable resource that can be used to power generators, which provide electricity. Players may encounter a puzzle where they need to find diesel fuel for a gas generator. The fuel can be found in a full tank behind the shed where the generator is located. Players must then follow the wires into another building to get the power going. Additionally, fuel can be crafted at a workbench using chemicals, and it is also encountered in the The Two Colonels DLC, where it can be picked up and used with a flamethrower.

What You'll Learn

Gas generator puzzle in The Volga
In Metro Exodus, one of the challenges you may encounter in the Volga region is the gas generator puzzle. This puzzle is entirely optional, but the rewards are worth it. To access the puzzle, you must first travel by boat to a small island in the southwestern corner of The Volga. It is difficult to find a boat before you meet the mechanic Krest at the port. Once you have the boat, head to the island, which is home to a house with the electricity puzzle inside.
Before heading to the island, you may want to take the time to kill the Catfish that roams the waters of The Volga. This dangerous creature poses a risk of attack while navigating through the water. When you arrive at the island, you will encounter a couple of harmless locals that can be safely ignored. You will then find a sealed door with two switches, but you cannot get through the door. To find the gas generator, follow the wire from the door to a nearby building.
The gas can is located to the left of the entrance of the room with the generator. After fuelling the generator, you can turn on a switch that will open a metal grate door. Head past another locked door to a ramp that takes you upstairs. Drop down through a hole to find a circuit breaker to activate. After activating the circuit breaker, make sure to loot the room, and then head back to the sealed door. Opening the door will reveal some loot, including the Battery Charge Controller upgrade, which allows your batteries to last longer.
Once you’ve cleared out the sealed room, you can visit a safehouse on the same island. Be sure to grab every piece of Material and Chemicals that you can, as there is no reason to return to the island once you’ve cleared it out.

Gas cans behind the house with the generator
In Metro Exodus, you will encounter the gas generator puzzle more than once throughout the game. The problem is simple: a gas generator needs to be turned on, but you can't find any fuel to power it up.
The first gas generator puzzle can be found in The Volga. This is an optional puzzle, but the rewards are worth it. The puzzle sits on an island to the south in the middle of the map that is only accessible by boat. You must first get to the point in the storyline where you've met the mechanic Krest at the port. It will be difficult, if not impossible, to find a boat before then. Once you have the boat, head to the island. You may encounter shrimp mutants and the Tsar Fish (a very big fish) on your trip.
When you explore the tiny island, you will find a sealed door with two switches, but you can't get through the door. A gas generator sits in a nearby building, which you can find by following the wire. There's a gas can next to the generator, but it's empty. You can find the needed fuel outside of the building the generator is in, right next to the window. Once you power it up, you can turn on one switch that will open a metal grate door. Head past another locked door to a ramp that takes you upstairs. Drop down through a hole, and you’ll find a circuit breaker to activate. Make sure to loot the room, and then head back to the sealed door. Opening the door will reveal a gruesome scene and some loot. Most importantly, there’s the Battery Charge Controller upgrade, which will allow your batteries to last longer. After you’ve cleared out the sealed room, you can visit a safehouse on the same island. Make sure to grab every single piece of Material and Chemicals that you can as there really isn’t much of a reason to come back to this island once you’ve cleared it out.
The second generator puzzle is part of the core storyline and closer to the end of the game. You will find yourself in an underground complex that is swarming with spiders. A door needs to be opened and a nearby generator is the only way to do it. There are no usable gas cans immediately near the generator, so you will have to hunt them down while surrounded by deadly spiders. The correct gas can will be to the left of the entrance of the room that has the generator.

Gas cans in the outhouse
In Metro Exodus, you will encounter a gas generator puzzle in The Volga. This puzzle is entirely optional, but the rewards are worth it. To solve the puzzle, you will need to find a gas can to fuel the generator.
The gas can is located to the left of the entrance of the room that has the generator. It is outside of the building, right next to the window. Once you find the gas can, grab it and fuel the generator. This will provide some extra light, but keep your flashlight charged as it will still be dark.
Head up the stairs towards the door and turn on the door switch, which is on the right of the door. This will open the path for you to continue further into the level. Make sure to thoroughly search the area before leaving, as you won't be returning to this place.
In addition to this, it is worth noting that fuel containers in Metro Exodus always look like small red jerry cans. These can be found in the first DLC for Metro Exodus, The Two Colonels, and can give the player anywhere from 10 to 200 units of fuel.

Gas cans in the first DLC, The Two Colonels
The Two Colonels is the first DLC for Metro Exodus, a linear chapter with no open-world aspects and limited crafting options. It is story-driven, allowing players to learn more about the situation in Novosibirsk, mainly through its metro system. The player assumes the role of Colonel Khlebnikov, who cannot use a gas mask, flashlight, and other equipment from the base game.
The chapter includes new weapons, such as a flamethrower, a Kalash, and an Ashot. The flamethrower is a new weapon with its own set of upgrades, allowing players to modify its pneumatic mechanism and increase magazine size. The chapter also includes 8 new achievements/trophies, worth 200 Gamerscore, or 1 gold trophy and 7 bronze trophies.
The Two Colonels has received positive reviews, with players praising its storytelling as its strongest aspect. It takes around 2 to 2.5 hours to complete on normal difficulty.
While the chapter does not specifically mention gas cans, it does include a flamethrower with a standard pneumatic system and a small tank. This flamethrower can be found after a cutscene with the OSKOM troopers on a trolley cart. Additionally, there is a second flamethrower with an airtight pneumatic system and a small tank, which can be found at the end of a corridor with a broken chain-link.

Crafting fuel at a workbench
Crafting fuel is a crucial aspect of Metro Exodus, and the workbench is an essential tool for players to craft, modify, and upgrade their equipment. Here is a comprehensive guide to crafting fuel at a workbench:
Locating a Workbench
Before crafting fuel, players need to locate a workbench. Workbenches are scattered throughout the game world, particularly in settlements, hideouts, and safe houses. Krest's hideouts around the Volga often include a workbench, and players can also find one on the Aurora during the Volga chapter. Safe houses in The Volga are good starting points for players searching for their first workbench.
Crafting Fuel and Other Items
At a workbench, players can craft a variety of items, including fuel. Crafting consumables, such as med kits, gas mask filters, throwing grenades, and ammunition for various weapons, is a vital part of the game. Players can also craft special ammo variants, such as incendiary bullets, and throwables like Molotov cocktails and throwing knives.
Upgrading Equipment
In addition to crafting, workbenches are essential for upgrading equipment. Players can upgrade their weapons with attachments and modifications, improving accuracy, damage, and recoil control. They can also upgrade their gear, such as armoured vests, gas masks, and helmets, by finding modules and bringing them to a workbench. This doesn't cost crafting resources, but specific upgrade parts must be found in the game world first.
Weapon Maintenance
Weapon maintenance is another critical function of the workbench. Weapons need to be cleaned at a workbench to maintain maximum efficiency. Dirty weapons have reduced accuracy, a lower rate of fire, and are prone to jamming. Players can also repair damaged gas masks at the workbench, ensuring their survival in hazardous environments.
By utilising the workbench for crafting fuel and managing their equipment, players can enhance their performance and survival chances in the challenging world of Metro Exodus.
