Drills are tools that require fuel to operate, similar to how a pickaxe works. They are used for mining various types of ores, especially gemstones. There are six different sources of fuel that can be applied to a drill at a Drill Mechanic, an NPC that allows you to apply fuel and drill parts to your drill. To change the fuel in your drill, you can either find lava and press Q, or you can talk to the drill mechanic and put your drill and the fuel in the anvil to combine them.

Fuel with oil barrel

To fuel your drill with an oil barrel, you must first find a parts applier. This is located next to the forge, or, if you are in crystal hollows, you can find one at the crystal nucleus. Once you have found the parts applier, you can combine the oil barrel with your drill, much like you would apply any other part.

Oil barrels are a good choice of fuel as they are much cheaper than other types of fuel and give you a lot (10k). However, it is worth noting that oil barrels can only be used to fuel the composter, along with biofuel and volta.

If you are looking to refuel your drill on the go, you can also use the crystal nucleus in the Goblin Holdout, as they have added a drill mechanic in the crystal nucleus so you can use this one instead if you want to stay in your crystal hollows lobby.

If you are looking to change your drill's fuel tank or engine, you can do so by talking to a drill engineer and clicking the engine/fuel tank on the left side of the GUI. However, it does cost coins to remove.

Use a biofuel

To use a biofuel drill, you need to fill a canister in the biofuel composter with "tree sap" and other materials. Once the canister is full, you can take your biofuel drill and place it on the node, holding down the interact button to put the fuel canister in the drill. It will then work automatically as long as it has fuel.

Biofuel can be purchased from Bubu and SkyMart for 20,000 coins. It adds 3,000 fuel to drills when combined in a drill anvil or to the composter when inserted.

While it is generally cheaper and more efficient to use oil barrels or Volta, biofuel is a good option for Ironman players who can only obtain those fuels from Crystal Hollows chests.

You can also craft biofuel drills and radars for one iron each at the machining bench.

Combine fuel with the drill

Use the parts applier

To use the parts applier, you need to first locate the parts applier. It is usually found next to the forge (crystal nucleus if in crystal hollows). Once you have located the parts applier, you can begin the process of combining the fuel with the drill.

Place your drill on the left side of the parts applier. Ensure that the drill is facing the correct direction, with the end that needs to be refuelled facing the parts applier. Next, take your fuel and place it on the right side of the parts applier. The fuel should be positioned so that it is aligned with the drill, with the nozzle or opening facing towards the drill.

Once the drill and fuel are in place, it is time to activate the parts applier. Depending on the model of your parts applier, this step may vary. Some models may have a button or switch that needs to be pressed or activated, while others may have a lever that needs to be pulled or pushed. Refer to your parts applier's user manual for specific instructions on how to activate it.

After activating the parts applier, the fuel will be transferred to the drill, and the refuelling process will begin. You may see some indicators on the parts applier that show the progress of the refuelling, such as lights or a progress bar. Wait until the refuelling process is complete. This may take a few minutes, depending on the capacity of your fuel and the size of your drill's fuel tank.

Once the refuelling process is complete, you can remove your drill from the parts applier. Check the fuel gauge on your drill to ensure that it has been refuelled successfully. If the fuel gauge indicates a full tank, your drill is now ready for use. If the fuel gauge still shows a low fuel level, you may need to repeat the refuelling process or check for any blockages or issues with the fuel transfer.
