Changing The Fuel Filter On Your Bmw 346: Step-By-Step Guide

Changing the fuel filter on a BMW 346 is a simple task that can be completed in about 30 minutes. The fuel filter is located underneath the driver's seat and should be replaced every 15,000 miles or once a year to ensure optimal performance and prevent engine issues. This DIY project requires only a few tools, including a flat-head screwdriver, jack stands, and a new fuel filter.

Begin by raising the car on jack stands and locating the fuel pump fuse in the fuse box. Remove this fuse and start the car until it stalls, which will relieve the fuel system pressure. Next, remove the fuel filter bracket and use a screwdriver or pliers to loosen the clamps attaching the fuel pipes to the fuel filter. Be patient during this step as it may take some time and effort. Once the clamps are loosened, carefully remove the fuel pipes from the fuel filter, being cautious of any remaining fuel that may spill.

To install the new fuel filter, simply work in reverse order, ensuring that all clamps and hoses are tight. Reinstall the fuse, turn the ignition key, and press the accelerator to get the fuel flowing smoothly. Check for any leaks once the car is started, and you're done!

Locate the fuel filter

To locate the fuel filter on a BMW 346, you will need to raise the car on jack stands. The fuel filter is located underneath the driver's seat on the undercarriage of the car.

For the M52 and M54 engines, the fuel filter is mounted underneath the vehicle, approximately below the driver's seat on the left side.

For the M56 engine, the fuel filter is located inside the fuel tank and is considered a lifetime filter by BMW, meaning it does not require replacement.

The fuel filter is easily accessible and can be located by looking under the vehicle in the area of the driver's floor.

Remove the fuel pump fuse

To remove the fuel pump fuse from a BMW 346, follow these steps:

First, open the glove compartment and locate the fuse panel. Rotate the two fuse panel retaining tabs 90 degrees and lower the fuse panel.

Next, identify the correct fuse. For most BMW 346 models, the fuel pump fuse is fuse #54. However, check the fuse application chart located below your fuses to confirm the fuse number for your specific vehicle.

Once you have identified the fuel pump fuse, remove it from the fuse panel.

Keep in mind that there may be two fuses for the fuel pump in your BMW 346: one in the glove box and one in the fuse compartment under the hood, near the driver's side firewall. If you are having issues with your fuel pump, you may need to check and replace both fuses.

Remove the fuel filter bracket

To remove the fuel filter bracket, you will need a 10mm socket. The bracket is held in place by a single nut, which you should remove.

Before removing the bracket, you will need to remove the fuel pump fuse and run the vehicle until the engine stalls. Open the glove compartment, rotate the two fuse panel retaining tabs 90 degrees, and lower the fuse panel. Remove fuse #54 (or check the fuse application chart to identify the correct fuse for your vehicle). Then, start the car and wait until it stalls.

Next, locate the fuel filter. It will be found directly underneath the passenger foot mat, on the undercarriage of the car. You may need to remove a shield covering the fuel filter, which is held in place by three or more nuts. You will need an 8mm socket for this.

Now, you can remove the fuel filter bracket. Once the bracket is removed, use a flat-head screwdriver or pliers to loosen the three clamps attached to the fuel pipes. Loosen the clamps rather than removing them. Then, remove the four fuel pipes from the fuel filter. This may require some force and patience.

Place a pan underneath the fuel filter to catch any fuel that drips from the pipes. It is also advisable to have a second person with a fire extinguisher standing by.

Remove the fuel filter

To remove the fuel filter from your BMW 346, follow these steps:

First, make sure you have assembled your kit. You will need a flat-head screwdriver, jack stands, and axle stands. It is also recommended to have a fire extinguisher on hand.

Next, lift the side of the car onto two jack stands. You may also choose to leave the car jack raised under the car as a safety precaution.

Then, open the glove compartment and locate the fuse box. Remove the fuse in position #54 using the small red fuse clip provided.

Start the car and let it run until it stalls, removing any remaining fuel from the fuel lines.

Now, locate the fuel filter. It should be found directly underneath the passenger foot mat, on the undercarriage of the car.

Remove the nut holding the fuel filter bracket in place with a 10mm socket.

Using a flat-head screwdriver or pliers, loosen the three clamps attached to the fuel pipes. This may take some time and effort. Do not completely remove the clamps, just loosen them.

Once the clamps are loosened, remove the four fuel pipes from the fuel filter. You can do this by loosening the thick, small rubber pipe extensions and forcing them off the fuel filter with a screwdriver. Be careful, as up to one litre of fuel may still drip from the fuel pipes. Catch this in a pan to avoid spills and have a fire extinguisher on hand.

Finally, remove the fuel filter from the vehicle.

Fit the new fuel filter

Now that you have removed the old fuel filter, it is time to fit the new one.

First, ensure the rubber hoses and clamps are tight. Then, work in reverse order following all the previous steps. Once you have fitted the fuse back in, turn the ignition key to #2 and wait for 10 seconds, and press the accelerator, too. This will get the fuel back into the fuel lines.

You should be able to start the car without any issues. Press the accelerator a few times to ensure the fuel is flowing smoothly. Once the car is started, check for any leaks from the fuel filter.
