How is coal formed?

Coal is a black or brown rock that releases energy in the form of heat when burned. It is a non-renewable energy source because it takes millions of years to form. Coal is formed from plants that lived millions of years ago in swampy forests. As layers of dirt and rock covered these plants over time, the resulting pressure and heat turned them into coal.

The major coal beds of today resulted from the abundance of trees, ferns, and other plants that existed in the tropical forests of the Mississippian and Pennsylvanian geological periods. These periods, called the Lower and Upper Carboniferous in Europe and commonly known as the Coal Age, lasted for approximately 60 million years, from about 358 million to 298 million years ago. The Coal Age was an era of global glaciation, with wide river deltas and vast wetlands that provided ideal conditions for coal formation.

Peat eventually dried and hardened into lignite, a low-grade coal, due to the increased pressure and heat from the overlying layers of strata. Bituminous coal is the most abundant rank of coal found in the United States, containing 45%–86% carbon. It is used to generate electricity and is an important fuel and raw material for making iron and steel. Anthracite, or hard coal, is the highest-ranking type of coal with a higher heating value. It is a harder, glossy black coal used primarily for residential and commercial space heating. Anthracite forms from bituminous coal when great pressures develop in folded rock strata during the creation of mountain ranges.
