Lead was never added to diesel fuel. Instead, it was added to gasoline (also known as petrol) to prevent knocking in engines. This "leaded gasoline" contained an organolead compound called tetraethyllead (TEL), which was first added to gasoline in the 1920s. TEL increased the octane rating of gasoline, allowing for higher engine compression, improved vehicle performance, and better fuel economy.
However, concerns arose in the mid-20th century when scientists discovered the toxic effects of TEL. It was found to cause lead poisoning and was highly neurotoxic, especially to children's developing brains. How diesel engines work

Diesel engines and gasoline engines are both internal combustion engines designed to convert the chemical energy available in fuel into mechanical energy. However, they operate differently.
Firstly, a diesel engine has no spark plug. Instead, it compresses the air and then injects the fuel directly into the combustion chamber (direct injection). It is the heat of the compressed air that lights the fuel. The higher compression ratio of the diesel engine (14:1 to 25:1) compared to a gasoline engine (8:1 to 12:1) leads to better efficiency.
Rudolf Diesel, who invented the diesel engine in 1878, theorised that higher compression leads to higher efficiency and more power. When the piston squeezes air with the cylinder, the air becomes concentrated. Diesel fuel has a high energy content, so it is more likely to react with the concentrated air.
Another key difference is that gasoline engines generally use either carburetion, in which the air and fuel are mixed long before the air enters the cylinder, or port fuel injection, in which the fuel is injected just before the intake stroke (outside the cylinder). Diesel engines, on the other hand, use direct fuel injection, injecting the fuel directly into the cylinder.
